Frustrated by their stubbornness, Yunus (A.S.) warned them of Allah’s impending punishment and, in haste, left the city without waiting for divine permission.

The Great Storm and the Whale

As Prophet Yunus (A.S.) departed, he boarded a ship with other travelers. During the voyage, a violent storm struck, threatening to sink the vessel. The sailors believed someone on board had offended the divine order, so they cast lots to decide who should be thrown overboard to lighten the load. The lot fell upon Yunus (A.S.).

He realized that this was part of Allah’s decree and willingly threw himself into the sea. Instantly, a great fish (whale), sent by Allah, swallowed him whole—but not to harm him. Inside the darkness of the whale’s belly, surrounded by the ocean and night, Yunus (A.S.) found himself utterly alone—with no hope except in Allah.

The Dua of Prophet Yunus (A.S.)

It was in that deepest darkness that Prophet Yunus (A.S.) made one of the most powerful supplications ever recorded in the Qur’an:

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:87)
